RiffList Terms of Use

These Terms of Use ("Terms") are an agreement between you and Arlemo LLC, a Kansas limited liability company ("Arlemo", "we", "us"), for your use of RiffList, including the RiffList app for iPhone and the web app at rifflist.app. Our Privacy Policy at https://rifflist.app/privacy.html explains how we handle information and is part of these Terms.
1. What RiffList is
RiffList is a private, invite-only, turn-based list game. Someone starts a list with a title, invites people with a link or code, and members take turns adding short text entries called riffs. RiffList keeps track of whose turn it is, numbers accepted riffs, and can send turn alerts. Members can also rank a list's riffs against each other.
RiffList is not a public social network, a general messaging service, or a place to publish to the public. Lists are visible to their members. Section 5 explains what people who hold an invite link can see.
2. Accepting these Terms
By using RiffList you agree to these Terms and the Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use RiffList.
3. Who can use RiffList
You must be at least 13 years old. RiffList does not ask your age; by creating an account you confirm you are at least 13. If you are under 18, you confirm that a parent or guardian has reviewed these Terms with you and agrees to them.
You may not use RiffList if we previously disabled your account for violating these Terms, or if the law bars you from using it.
4. Accounts and usernames
Signing in. You sign in with an Apple or Google account. RiffList does not have its own passwords. Keep that account secure. You are responsible for what happens under your RiffList account. Tell us at support@rifflist.app if you think someone else is using it.
Account access. An account is for one person. Do not share it, let someone else use it, or create an account for someone else.
Sign-in methods. Your RiffList account is tied to the sign-in you used to create it. If your Apple and Google sign-ins give us the same verified email address, they may connect to one RiffList account, and you can connect the other method yourself from Account. Otherwise a different sign-in is a separate account with its own username. RiffList does not merge two established accounts.
Usernames. You choose a username (3 to 20 characters: lowercase letters, numbers, dashes, or underscores) when you first sign in. It cannot be changed. Other members see your username rather than the name or email on your sign-in account; the Privacy Policy explains who can see what. Do not choose a username that impersonates a person or organization, contains someone else's trademark, or is abusive. Some names are reserved. We may retire a username that violates these Terms.
5. Invite-only lists and invite links
Invite links. Any member can create an invite link (or code) for a list. Anyone who holds an invite link can read the list title, house rules, join mode, and status without signing in. The invite page shows the title before you sign in and the house rules when you arrive at the list. In a list set to "Anyone with link", anyone who signs in with the link becomes a member. In a list set to "Owner lets people in", the owner must approve each person before they join.
Links do not expire. Today, invite links have no expiration and no use limit, and the owner cannot turn them off. Treat a link like a key: share it only with people you want in the list. The join mode is chosen when the list is created and cannot be changed afterward. If a link gets out, the owner can end the list. If the list was created in owner-approval mode, the owner can also decline new join requests.
Limits. Lists have limits on how many members and riffs they can hold. We may change limits.
6. Your content
What is yours. You own the riffs, corrections, comments, house rules, and other content you add to RiffList ("your content"). We do not claim ownership of it.
License to us. So that RiffList can work, you give Arlemo a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, store, copy, back up, display, transmit, and format your content, and to let our service providers do the same on our behalf, for the purposes of operating, securing, and supporting RiffList, fixing problems, and enforcing these Terms. This license does not allow us to sell your content, use it to train software models, or publish it outside the list you added it to, except as required by law or to respond to a safety issue.
Who sees it. Your content is shown to the members of the list you add it to, with your username. Members can copy, screenshot, or repeat it. RiffList cannot control what members do outside the app.
Corrections and comments. You can correct the spelling of your own riff; the riff keeps its number and shows a marker. You can add, edit, or remove a comment on your own riff, and add or remove your own reactions. You cannot edit or delete a riff once it is numbered, because later riffs depend on it.
Ranking picks. When you rank riffs, your individual picks are private. The list's leaderboard shows the combined result.
When you leave a list. Your riffs, corrections, comments, reactions, and challenges stay in the list with your username so the list still makes sense. You lose access to the list.
When you delete your account. You choose whether your riffs, corrections, comments, reactions, challenges, and ranking picks stay in your lists under a deleted-member name (the default) or are removed, leaving empty numbered placeholders. Your account information is deleted as described in Section 10 and the Privacy Policy. The license above continues for any contributions that stay.
Your responsibility. You are responsible for your content. Only add content you have the right to add. Do not add other people's personal information (home addresses, phone numbers, private facts) without their permission.
7. Rules of conduct
Do not use RiffList to:
- harass, threaten, bully, or target another person
- post hate speech or content that demeans people because of who they are
- post sexually explicit content
- exploit, endanger, or sexualize minors
- post illegal content or organize illegal activity
- infringe copyright, trademark, privacy, publicity, or other rights
- post spam, scams, phishing, or deceptive content
- add web links (RiffList rejects web addresses in riffs, titles, house rules, comments, and corrections)
- impersonate a person or organization
- use bots, scripts, scraping, or automation, or try to get around limits, app integrity checks, or security
- try to access lists, accounts, or data you are not entitled to
- interfere with RiffList's operation or infrastructure
- use RiffList as a general messaging system or to publish content to the public
Product limits. RiffList enforces character limits (riffs and titles up to 120 characters, comments up to 1000, house rules up to 2000), a no-links rule, a short fixed list of blocked words and phrases, daily limits on how many lists an account can create, member and riff caps per list, and app integrity tokens requested from your device or browser. These limits are part of how RiffList works and may change.
8. List owners
The person who creates a list is its owner. Owners have these tools in RiffList today:
- choose whether anyone with the link can join or the owner lets people in, and approve or decline join requests ("Let in" / "Not now")
- write house rules, which anyone holding an invite link can read
- pause or resume any member's turns
- "Rewind to here": void every riff after a chosen riff, with a typed confirmation and a reason that members can see
- end the list, which freezes it; an ended list cannot be reopened
- delete the list, but only while the owner is its only member and every riff is the owner's
Owners cannot remove a member today. If someone in your list is a problem, the owner can pause their turns, rewind, or end the list; any member can leave the list, report the person or their riffs, or block them (Section 9).
House rules are the owner's content. RiffList does not read or enforce them. Owners are responsible for how they run their lists, and members are responsible for their own content. Arlemo does not take sides in disagreements among members unless these Terms are violated.
9. Reporting, blocking, and moderation
How to report. Open a riff's details and choose Report riff or Report comment. To report a person, open People and choose Report beside their name. Pick a reason and add a note if you want. For anything else, use List options > Report problem, Report a problem in your profile's Help menu, or email support@rifflist.app. Reports include your account email so we can follow up. Other members cannot read your report, and we do not tell you what action we took about another member.
Blocking. You can block another member from People or after sending a report. Blocking leaves the lists you share with that person; your contributions stay. If you own a list where that person is the only other member, the list ends and its history stays. While a block is in place, neither of you can join a list the other already belongs to. The other person is not told. You can unblock from your profile under Account; unblocking does not rejoin any list.
What we do. We may, at our discretion, remove a riff or comment (a removed riff keeps its number as an empty placeholder), void riffs, freeze or end a list, restrict what an account can do, or suspend or disable an account. We keep the reports we receive. Where practical, we tell you when we take action on your account, unless the law prevents it or telling you would put someone at risk.
No obligation to monitor. RiffList does not review content before it is posted and does not promise to find or remove every item that someone finds objectionable. Members are responsible for the content they add; Arlemo is not. RiffList's automatic checks are the no-links rule, length limits, duplicate matching, daily quotas, app integrity tokens, and a short fixed list of blocked words and phrases that new riffs, corrections, comments, titles, house rules, and usernames are checked against. None of them reads or judges meaning. A person reads reports.
10. Deleting your account
To delete your account, open your profile in the app, choose Account, then Delete account. The app shows the lists you host and what happens to each, lets you choose whether your contributions stay (Section 6), asks you to type DELETE, and asks you to confirm your sign-in. Deletion then continues on our servers; the app shows its progress and tells you when it is complete. Signing in again afterward creates a new account. If you do not see Delete account, or something goes wrong, email privacy@rifflist.app from your account email and we will complete it for you.
We delete your account record, email address and name, username reservation, sign-in connections, memberships, push tokens, diagnostic events, invites you created, reports you sent, and your blocks. Lists you host pass to another member or end, as the app shows you before you confirm. Reports other people sent about you keep their text and outcome with your identity removed. We keep anything we must keep by law or to resolve a dispute, and copies may remain in backups until those expire.
11. Suspension and termination
You may stop using RiffList at any time and ask us to delete your account.
We may suspend, restrict, or disable your account, or remove content, if we reasonably believe you have violated these Terms, created risk or legal exposure for us or for others, or if the law requires it. We may also end or suspend RiffList as a whole (Section 12). If we disable your account for a violation, you may not create another one.
Sections 6 (as to content that remains in lists), 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18 survive termination.
12. Changes to RiffList and to these Terms
RiffList is new and changes often. We may add, change, limit, or remove features, change limits, or stop offering RiffList, with or without notice. If we decide to shut RiffList down, we will try to give notice first so you can copy anything you want to keep.
We may update these Terms. We update the effective date and post the new version at https://rifflist.app/terms.html. For changes that matter to you, we will tell you in the app or by email before they take effect. If you keep using RiffList after updated Terms take effect, you agree to them. If you do not agree, stop using RiffList and ask us to delete your account.
13. Arlemo's property
RiffList, the RiffList name and logo, the app, the website, and their design and code belong to Arlemo LLC or its licensors. These Terms do not give you any right to them except to use RiffList as these Terms allow. RiffList includes open-source software, which stays under its own licenses.
14. Feedback
If you send us ideas or suggestions, we may use them without any obligation to you.
15. Disclaimers
RiffList is provided "as is" and "as available". To the fullest extent the law allows, Arlemo disclaims all warranties, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not promise that RiffList will be available, error-free, or secure, that your content will be preserved, or that any content in a list is accurate or appropriate. Some states do not allow some of these disclaimers, so some may not apply to you.
16. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows:
(a) Arlemo, its member, and its service providers will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for lost data, lost profits, or loss of goodwill, arising from RiffList or these Terms, even if we were told such damages were possible; and
(b) Arlemo's total liability for all claims relating to RiffList will not exceed the greater of $100 or the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim. RiffList is free today, so the cap is $100.
These limits do not apply to liability that cannot be limited by law. Some states do not allow limits on certain damages, so some of these limits may not apply to you.
17. Governing law and disputes
Kansas law. These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Kansas, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, and by United States federal law where it applies.
Talk to us first. If you have a dispute with us, email support@rifflist.app with your name, your account email, a description of the problem, and what you would like us to do. We will try to resolve it informally. Neither of us will start a lawsuit until at least 30 days after that notice, unless a claim needs urgent court relief.
Courts. Any lawsuit about RiffList or these Terms will be brought in the state or federal courts located in Kansas, and you and Arlemo agree to those courts. You may instead bring a qualifying claim in the small claims court where you live. These Terms do not require arbitration.
18. Other terms
Entire agreement. These Terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and Arlemo about RiffList.
Severability. If a court finds part of these Terms unenforceable, the rest still applies.
No waiver. If we do not enforce a term right away, we can still enforce it later.
Assignment. You may not transfer your account or these Terms to anyone else. We may transfer them to a successor that takes over RiffList.
Notices. We may notify you in the app or by email to your account address. You can notify us at support@rifflist.app.
Apple. Apple is not a party to these Terms and is not responsible for RiffList or its content.
